A small group of parents should not be allowed to dictate what books other people's children are allowed to read.
Young people benefit from reading books that reflect their own identity and experience, and also books that represent the full range of people in their community. These books help young readers understand how to navigate a complex world and help build a culture of understanding and respect.
I fully support the curation efforts of trained educators and librarians based on educational value, literary merit, and appropriateness for different reading levels. However, book banning by one parent or a small group of parents based on their own political or religious beliefs is inappropriate.
Removing and banning books from public libraries is a slippery slope to government censorship and the erosion of our country's commitment to freedom of expression.
We should trust individuals to make their own decisions about what they read and what they believe.
Please reject any efforts to ban books, and instead allow individuals and parents to make their own decisions about what to read and what to believe.
We must protect our teachers' and librarians' ability to do their jobs without fear of harassment or intimidation.
Sincerely,
<Your name>
